Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Isaiah 55:2 NKJV
Why do you spend your money on what is not bread? According to John 6:35 “And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. Jesus is referring to himself as the Bread of life. In other words; why do you spend money for what is not Jesus?. Its so amazing how Jesus is feeling so concerned about how our money is spent.
When it’s payday and that direct deposit hits your account, you tend to swipe your card in a day. The first thing to think about is what dress to buy, what pair of shoe to buy, rent, etc. Each day we’re convinced to buy things we don’t need, spend money we don’t have and purchase garbage that loses its value within a matter of weeks. How about we shift our funds, wages to making disciples as assigned by Jesus (Matthew 28:19). All these things are good to have but i think we should not lose out on what God has planned for us while chasing things that will never satisfy. A 20-year study conducted by Dr. Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University, reached a powerful and straightforward conclusion: Don’t spend your money on things. The trouble with things is that the happiness they provide fades quickly. You buy a phone today, after one month you need another one and the cycle goes on and on. This is because what once seemed novel and exciting quickly becomes the norm. As soon as we get used to a new possession, we look for an even better one. We buy a new car and are thrilled with it until a friend buys a better one.
Isaiah 55:2 makes it very clear, “and your wages for what does not satisfy” Cars, houses, phone, name it can never satisfy you. But pursuing that God has created you for is what will ever give you satisfaction. Its high time we thought for clarity about what is required or expected of us than wasting the resources He has entrusted us with on things that do not benefit His Kingdom.
